Hetzner and DigitalOcean: What European Teams Weigh Up
One competes on how much compute a budget buys; the other on how quickly you can get moving. Both arguments are legitimate.
This comparison comes up constantly among European teams, and it is a genuine trade-off rather than a case of one option being behind.
The core difference
Hetzner competes on resources per unit of cost. It operates its own European data centres and keeps the product line narrow, and that shows up in what a given monthly figure buys.
DigitalOcean competes on time to productivity: documentation, marketplace images, a broader set of managed services, and a wider geographic footprint.
Put plainly, one saves money and the other saves hours. Which matters more depends on what your team is short of.
Geography
Hetzner’s presence is predominantly European. For a European audience that is an advantage in both latency and data residency. For users in North America, Asia or South America it is a real cost in round-trip time that no optimisation removes.
DigitalOcean operates across more regions, which matters once your audience is distributed. Placement considerations are covered in regions and availability zones.
Ecosystem
DigitalOcean’s tutorial library and marketplace genuinely shorten setup, particularly for teams without a dedicated infrastructure person. Hetzner provides solid documentation but less hand-holding, on the assumption that you know what you want to build.
When each is the better answer
Hetzner when the workload is compute-heavy, the audience is European, the team is comfortable assembling its own stack, and the budget is the binding constraint.
DigitalOcean when the audience is distributed, when managed services would save meaningful engineering time, or when getting to a running system quickly matters more than the monthly figure.
A common arrangement
Some teams run both: steady compute-heavy workloads where the cost advantage compounds, and user-facing or distributed services where geography and managed services matter. That is a legitimate pattern, though it doubles the operational surface, as discussed in cloud planning for early-stage teams.
Account options
Hetzner configurations are counted in servers with open-port variants; DigitalOcean configurations are counted in droplets. Background is in Hetzner price-to-performance.
Side by side configurations and current prices for both providers are on the Hetzner vs DigitalOcean page in the Cloud Matrix.
