How Cloud Credits Are Applied, and What They Never Cover
Credit is not cash. It applies to eligible services, expires on a date, and is consumed silently. Those three properties explain most credit surprises.
Promotional credit is the most misunderstood item on a cloud bill. It looks like a prepaid balance and behaves like a restricted voucher.
Three properties that define credit
It is dated
Credit almost always carries an expiry. Unused balance on the expiry date is gone; it does not roll over. A large balance with a near expiry may be worth less in practice than a smaller one with a longer window.
It is service-restricted
Credit typically applies to the provider’s own eligible services. Common exclusions include third-party marketplace software, some support plans, certain licensing charges, and taxes. The exclusions are listed in the terms attached to the original offer.
It is consumed silently
There is no prompt when the balance runs low. Charges are offset until they are not, and the first visible sign is usually a charge against the payment method.
The order of application
Providers generally apply credit to eligible charges as they accrue, before charging the payment method. Where several credits exist, the one expiring soonest is usually applied first. Ineligible charges pass straight through to the card regardless of how much credit remains, which is why a bill can arrive while the balance still shows a positive figure.
Verifying a balance
Three things are worth confirming, in the console rather than from a description:
- The remaining amount.
- The expiry date.
- The eligibility restrictions attached to the original offer.
An amount without the other two is only a third of the picture.
Where credit appears in the catalogue
Several configurations are built around residual balances, including tiers under Google Cloud, Azure and AWS, and smaller account balances on Linode and UpCloud. Note that account credit on smaller providers often behaves more simply than service-restricted promotional credit on the large platforms.
Treat it as a runway
The healthiest way to think about credit is as time rather than money: it buys you a number of weeks before your own payment method starts carrying the load. Planning for that moment is covered in planning for credit expiry.
